The most dangerous – and safest – areas of the region to live in has been revealed by police crime statistics.

Cumbria Police keeps meticulous records of where and when crimes are committed, allowing comparisons to be drawn between different areas.

Although the statistics do not provide details of each individual crime, they are sorted by type: anti-social behaviour; violent and sexual offences; public order offences; and criminal damage and arson.

Police also use set boundaries to compare areas, which don’t always match up with local authority boundaries.

Here is the number of crimes committed in your area over the last 12 months:

Kirkby Stephen and Upper Eden

The boundary of this area includes Kirkby Thore, Appleby, Tebay, Kirkby Stephen, and Brough.

In the past year, there has been 116 anti-social behaviour incidents, and 116 criminal damage and arson incident. Police have responded to 238 violent and sexual offences, 48 burglaries, 67 public order offences, 18 incidents of shoplifting, 44 vehicle crimes and four bicycle thefts. There has also been two weapons possession offences and three robberies.

Penrith Town

This area boundary is quite self-explanatory, spanning from the M6 roundabout up to Plumpton Head.

Due to the population and the urban nature of Penrith there are a lot more violent and criminal damage crimes.

In the past year, there has been 528 violent and sexual offences in Penrith, 168 criminal damage and arson incidents. A much larger retail presence than other areas bring with it a much higher incidence of shoplifting, with 142 incidents recorded over the last 12 months. There has also been 41 drug offences, 136 public order offences, 31 vehicle crimes, 71 burglaries, two robberies, five thefts from a person, and three bicycle thefts.

Keswick

Keswick, the boundary of which takes in Seathwaite in the south and Bassenthwaite in the north, is similar to Penrith in terms of retail but sees much fewer shoplifting incidents. The number of violent and sexual offences is also much fewer than in Penrith.

In the past, there has been 163 violent and sexual offences, compared to 528 in Penrith in the same time period, and 24 shoplifting incidents, compared to 142 in Penrith.

There has also been 78 incidents of anti-social behaviour, 38 burglaries, 52 incidents of criminal damage and arson, 56 public order offences, five bicycle thefts, 11 drug offences, six thefts from a person, and three weapons possession offences.

Appleby Town, Appleby Rural and Shap

This statistical region is misleadingly named as it doesn’t actually include Appleby – it runs from Shap in the south-east of the boundary to Hesket Newmarket in the north, and from Glenridding in the west right up to the edge of Penrith in the east.

Similar to Kirkby Stephen and Upper Eden, there has been much fewer crimes than in the town regions.

In the past year, there has been 55 incidents of anti-social behaviour, 50 criminal damage and arson incidents, 43 public order offences, 132 violent and sexual offences, 51 burglaries, 28 drugs offences, and 15 vehicle crimes. Furthermore, there has been eight instances of shoplifting, two weapons possession offences, one robbery and a single bicycle theft.

Penrith Rural, Lake and Alston

This patch runs from Edenhall in the south, to Armathwaite in the north, and from Southwaite in the west to Nenthead in the east, and is the largest geographical area mapped by the police.

Despite being one of the most rural areas on the list, it still has its fair share of crime problems.

In the last 12 months there has been 167 violent and sexual offences, 50 anti-social behaviour incidents, 41 burglaries, 34 criminal damage and arson incidents, 13 drug offences, and 17 vehicle offences. There has also been five instances of shoplifting, 30 public offences and one bicycle theft.
