A MAN fractured his shoulder at a busy South Cumbria train station, after he fell from the platform and ended up trapped on the railway tracks.

In a bizarre weekend accident, the man required immediate rescue to carry him out of harm’s way as he found himself pinned down by his own mobility scooter on a live railway track.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers reported the alarming incident at Windermere Station on Saturday.

The man, who was using a mobility scooter, became trapped underneath his mobility carriage on the tracks after inadvertently driving over the edge of the platform.

As the man reportedly attempted to perform a three-point turn, witnesses say he unintentionally reversed off the platform.

He then landed on the train tracks, partially pinned down by the mobility scooter.

With assistance from the Cumbria Fire and Rescue service, BTP officers managed to remove him from any further danger.

An ambulance arrived shortly after and carried the man to hospital. Officers later confirmed the man had sustained a fracture to his shoulder.

But, BTP Lancashire clarified that 'it won’t require surgery, and he should be back home soon.'

The main North West branch of the transport police reported an increase in the number of people at railway stations in south Cumbria over the weekend - in particular at stations in the Lake District and Furness.

It is thought the increase in passenger numbers may have been a result of the warm weather last weekend.

In a social media post, the Lancashire BTP force said: “There’s been a noticeable increase in passengers - mainly [for] leisure travel. Passengers are being encouraged to have confidence in using the trains again with the industry’s Safer Travel Pledge.”

Network Rail has advised customers to travel at 'quieter times' as passenger numbers begin to rise again considerably.

BTP was approached for an update and comment this week.

The Lakes Line Rail User Group said it was: "sorry to hear about the accident at Windermere, and pleased that the scooter driver was not seriously hurt. We wish the driver a speedy recovery.

"The Group does not have any safety concerns about the Lakes Line stations, but we continue to lobby for full access to Staveley station for passengers with mobility issues."
