We’ve been looking through our archives at pictures of the shops in the busy market town of Penrith.
The town boosts a range of shops from traditional, family-owned businesses to national High Street chains including N Arnison & Sons, better known as Arnison’s.
Established in 1742, the clothing and accessories shop is the oldest family-run clothing retailer in the UK and recently featured in an episode of the popular TV drama The A Word.
Another famous Penrith trader is the Penrith Toffee Shop. This independent store has been producing handmade fudge and toffee since 1910 using a secret family recipe.
The Royal family are rumoured to enjoy Penrith toffee and fudge and the HRH the Prince of Wales re-opened the shop after its refurbishment in 2003.
Penrith is a shopper’s paradise with a range of independent, specialist shops selling books, clothes, jewellery and food.
