READERS have largely backed the new government restrictions around public gatherings.

New measures have been introduced by Number 10 this week in a last-ditch effort to ward off a second peak of Covid-19 infections.

Barrow MP Simon Fell has spoken of the disastrous effects such a scenario could hold for Furness, raising the prospect of widespread school closures and the shutting down of essential shops along with other key businesses across the district.

Under the new rules, designed to limit the virus’ transmission during the critical autumn and winter months, members of the public risk being fined or arrested if gathered in a group of more than six.

This new ‘rule of six’ was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday.

Mail readers voted unanimously in favour of the new restrictions in a readers’ poll this week.

Commenting on the introduction of the ‘rule of six’ this week, some readers criticised other aspects of Covid governance.

Nicola Wise, for instance, said: “We need more test availability. Trying to get hold of an appointment is a nightmare right now!”

Scott A Hartley reminded readers that ‘Nationwide we are seeing an increase in positive tests’.

But the new rule change has also left some readers scratching their heads.

Brian White said yesterday: “No more than six gathered together. But you’re telling us it’s safe to send your kids to school. I am confused.”
