Those at risk of eviction in the South Lakes area are being urged to get in touch with the local authority as soon as possible.

Evictions were paused during the coronavirus outbreak with any court action to remove tenants on hold until September 20.

From that date, landlords across the UK wishing to evict can apply for a court order to start the process of making tenants leave.

Councillor Jonathan Brook, SLDC deputy leader and portfolio holder for housing and innovation has urged people to get in touch.

The councillor said: “As always, our message to anyone facing the plight of homelessness is to get in touch with us as quickly as possible.

"The sooner people ask for help, the more chance there is that we can prevent them losing the safety and security of the roof over their head.”

Last month the Council made the sum of £461,000 specifically available to develop additional homelessness accommodation for families.

This additional accommodation should be available in the next few months.

Simon Fell, MP for Barrow thinks the long notice period should help.

He said: “Alongside extending the ban on evictions by another month due to the unprecedented impact of Coronavirus, the Communities Secretary is aiming to put in place a 6 month notice periods, until at least 31 March 2021.

"This gives tenants greater protection from eviction over the winter months for all bar those cases raising serious issues such as anti-social behaviour and domestic abuse.”
