The BBC's flagship political discussion programme Question Time heard questions from a Carlisle audience last night.

A "virtual" audience of Carlisle residents joined the programme via video call last night to put questions to Conservative transport minister Grant Shapps, Labour shadow sports minister Alison McGovern, SNP MP David Linden, chairman of online retailer Ocado Stuart Rose, and Helen Stokes-Lampard, a GP and chairwoman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

Issues discussed included the Government's approach to asylum seekers, following a report from the Guardian newspaper suggesting that Downing Street had instructed civil servants to consider sending asylum seekers to Moldova, Morocco or Papua New Guinea for processing.

Another issue high on the agenda was the Government's handling of the return of university students, prompted by a question from a Cumbrian student currently at a Scottish university.

She quizzed the panel on how the mental health impact of tight restrictions on students' activities should be addressed.

The programme, presented by Fiona Bruce, is available to watch via the BBC iPlayer.
