A WOMAN was stretchered to an ambulance by mountain rescuers after injuring her ankle while walking in the Lake District.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) was called out to the incident near the 'green' car park at Wasdale Head at around12.40pm on Thursday.

A WMRT spokesman said a call about the casualty had been put into the police by a passing walker.

The spokesman said: "It wasn’t possible to speak to the casualty by phone or pinpoint her location, so a local team member was tasked to confirm the location as the rest of the team were mobilised.

"The team were quickly on scene.

"The lady was given mild pain killers and carried down by stretcher to an awaiting ambulance."

The incident involved 14 mountain rescue team members.
