Parking concerns are rife across parts of southern Carlisle, one city councillor has said, and he is seeking to have their concerns addressed by authorities.

Robert Betton, independent Carlisle City Councillor for Botcherby and Harraby North, is calling on his fellow councillors to explore options for alleviating current parking issues around the 3G football pitches on Edgehill Road in Harraby, and near to the Rosehill industrial estate.

Mr Betton is set to present the concerns of residents to the city council at its next meeting, this coming Tuesday.

“The 3G football pitches at Edgehill Road, Harraby, are very well used by all and extremely successful," Mr Betton said in advance of the meeting.

"The demand for the use of these football pitches at weekends for club football matches has increased so much that the existing car park accommodation on site is now limited.

"There are not enough car park spaces to cope with the increase in demand for both spectators and club football players’ car parking."

Mr Betton explained that this is leading to "overspill" into streets nearby, including Edgehill, Allandale, & Silverdale Road.

He said this is causing an "inconvenience to those who live there and have expressed concern".

Solutions to the issue Mr Betton has proposed include negotiating the use of the "vacated and redundant old temporary Newman school car park, Edgehill Road", or to explore a potential extension to the existing 3G car park.

Further alternatives Mr Betton include encouraging the use of "the old Harraby Community Centre car park, to "look at the possibility of 3G customers using the new Pennine Way school and Harraby Community Centre car park", and "to look at working with County Council parking enforcement and the police regarding any obstruction or parking contravention on marked highway lines".

Mr Betton will present a motion at next week's meeting requesting that a commitment be given to working with GLL, the company behind the 3G pitches, the county council and the police to resolve the "excess parking issues".

Another parking issue in south Carlisle Mr Betton says is causing widespread concern relates to the recent loss of free car parking on the Rosehill industrial estate, as land formerly used for this purpose was developed.

“Three years ago land on Rosehill Industrial estate which was owned by Carlisle City Council was sold," Mr Betton explained.

"Previously before the land was sold it was used as a car park which provided free car parking for visitors and employees to the Rosehill Industrial Estate area.

"Free car parking was offered by the new owners but was retracted when development of the land was completed."

Mr Betton said that Durranhill area residents are concerned over the increase in parking on residential streets following the end of the free parking offer on the industrial estate.

"There are also highway safety concerns expressed by Durranhill residents regarding vehicles parking on and obscuring driveways and disabled access, junctions and yellow lines which obscure motorists and pedestrian vision," he said.

Mr Betton added that these concerns have now been ongoing for some time.

"These concerns have been reported, expressed and shared with city and county council, since the sale of the land three years ago and are still ongoing despite meetings and talks which have taken place without any clear resolution reached to solve this problem."

Mr Betton hopes to secure at next week's meeting a commitment from the council to work with the county council towards resolving the issues, and for a meeting to take place between the city council, county council and the Rosehill site landowners, to "ask again to reconsider opening up and offering free parking again".
