TWO flood alerts have been put out for north Cumbria.

The Flood Information Service put out alerts for the coastal areas between Gretna and Silloth, and the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water

The alert status means that "flooding is possible - be prepared".

Speaking about the Gretna to Silloth alert, a spokesman for the service said: "A tidal surge is expected to affect the foreshore as a result of high tides and winds.

"Tides will be at their highest between 11.45pm and 12.45pm today, December 16, however conditions may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land, roads and coastal paths at Mossband Hall, Eden estuary, Burgh Marsh, Port Carlisle, Bowness-on-Solway, Wampool estuary, Waver estuary, Skinburness Marsh, Skinburness and Silloth. We are closely monitoring the situation."

On the Upper River Derwent alert, he said: "Lake level remains high as a result of heavy rainfall. Further showers are expected today, December 15 and further rainfall is also forecast throughout the day tomorrow, December 16.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Seatoller, Stonethwaite, Rosthwaite, Grange-in-Borrowdale and Derwent Water shoreline areas. High river and lake levels are possible on the River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck, Watendlath Beck, Derwent Water and their tributaries. We are closely monitoring the situation."

Updates will be provided as they happen.
