Dedicated until the end, tributes have been left for a woman who had Wigton in her heart.

Mave Tyas dedicated her time to sustaining Wigton Baths. But, following an illness, she passed away at the weekend. Councillor Alan Pitcher said in a moving tribute: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of trust member and former chair Mave Tyas.

“Mave had been poorly for quite a long while, which didn’t prevent her from doing trust work, but she succumbed to cancer.

“In 2014, we announced we were setting up a trust to save Wigton Baths, Mave was one of the first volunteers to join up and she made it clear that defeat wasn’t an option.

“I can honestly say without Mave, first as my deputy and then subsequently chair, the baths wouldn’t be there now. She worked tirelessly from day one looking for grants or any form of support to ensure the pool could remain viable, she had input into every aspect of the project.

“She was relentless in hunting people down to find money and had endless ideas about where she thought the whole project should go.

“The loft extension idea was Mave’s and she constantly pushed me to help her dream come true, I always hoped it would be built before she left us but it was not to be.

“Mave will be missed by everyone who’s been involved with the pool, staff, trust members and the public alike.”

She died peacefully at home with her family.

The family have asked for any donations you would like to send please send them to Wigton Baths Trust so Mave’s work can continue.”
