A special fundraising event is being planned to mark what would have been a popular young rugby player's 21st birthday.

Cameron Taylor, 20, passed away earlier this year following a tragic accident while at work on the Lillyhall industrial estate.

He would have celebrated his milestone birthday on November 3.

Cameron's loved ones will gather in his memory at Whitehaven Rugby League Club for the fundraiser on November 13.

All money raised will go to the Great North Air Ambulance Service, which attended the scene of Cameron's accident.

Lauren Allan, Cameron's auntie, who has organised the event, said: "We've managed to find a really good Elton John tribute act to play. Cam absolutely loved Elton John. He was a proper old soul.

"All of Cam's teammates from the rugby and all his friends and family are going to celebrate what would have been his 21st.

"The weekend of his birthday he would have gone to the Kells Club for a few pints and on into town with his Kells teammates. Probably a quiet meal with his family on the day of his birthday.

"He never liked a fuss, and wouldn’t have planned a big party himself but I’d definitely get best auntie points if I had surprised him with the Elton John tribute act."

Cameron, known locally as 'Tadge', had played for Kells Amateur Rugby League Club since he was eight-years-old and has been described as a “a fantastic player”.

Paying tribute to her late nephew, Lauren said: "I would see Cameron every day at my mam and dad's house. We were really close.

"He was a quiet kid but everybody absolutely loved him. He was an old soul. He was a really good kid. He was brilliant with my two boys. He didn't have a bad bone in his body.

"Him and his brother, Brandon, we were like the three musketeers. We were always together.

"He went to work during the week and then he played rugby at the weekend with his friends. That was it. He was a simple kid. That was as much as he wanted from life."

Cameron, a former St Benedict's School pupil, had been working at Coombe & Sharpe Landscaping Ltd as a joiner for six months and it was a job that he had "really taken to".

Lauren said: "They've shown us his work and it was absolutely fantastic. They couldn't believe it for someone who had only been doing the job for such a short amount of time."

A small number of tickets are still available for the event and raffle tickets are also being sold for £5.
