School children have been tackling the game of rugby and hearing from an "inspiring" deaf athlete.

Pupils at Kirkland C of E Academy took part in a rugby training session with Andrew Branthwaite from Workington Zebras RUFC and Charlotte Cammock from Workington Zebra Finches.

They have also recently enjoyed a visit from Brigham athlete, Bethan Lishman, who has competed in the Deaflympics.

Helen Shore, PE Lead, said: "Each child enjoyed every minute and was fully engaged throughout the whole session. They all showed superb progress throughout the afternoon and are eager to attend future training sessions.

"Staff at Kirkland Academy are committed to ensuring all children have the opportunity to experience a variety of sports. The benefits, both physically and mentally, are extensive and wide-ranging."

Andrew Branthwaite, coaching coordinator, said: “Thank you to all at the school for making Charlotte and myself feel so welcome.

"All of the kids were so enthusiastic and gave everything a good go. They were a real credit to themselves, the school and their families.

"There were some impressive rugby skills on display and we hope to see the kids again."

Bethan talked to children about her experiences and showed them her photographs and medals.

Ms Shore said: "She was a complete inspiration. She was kind enough to lead some javelin sessions with all the children too. It was just brilliant."

All are welcome to attend the rugby union training sessions at Workington RFC on Sundays at 10am.
