Readers have been responding to a story following an event which showcased two major projects.

Carlisle Racecourse hosted a free public event on Tuesday to update the public on the work around St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and Carlisle Southern Link Road.

A joint event from Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council included three exhibitions, providing information and a chance to give feedback on the ‘Start with the Park’ landscaping competition, the St Cuthbert’s Local Plan and Carlisle Southern Link Road.

The Start with the Park competition aims to select an individual or team to design a new Greenaway and Park, the centre piece of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.

St Cuthbert’s Garden Village plan will deliver 10,000 new homes south of Carlisle.

Designs by three finalists in the landscaping competition were on-show at the exhibition: St Cuthbert’s Monastic Gardens by AFL Architects, the Weave by BMD and JTP and the Greenaway Ribbon by Gillespies.

Readers were asked what they thought about the plans.

Andrea Templeton said: “Before building new homes, how about putting the money into Carlisle.

“[Firstly] to help with drainage problems.

“[Secondly] to build a bigger hospital that will be able to deal with more people.

“[Thirdly] to build factories and shops that can create more jobs to help the county now, and more doctors and dentists, actual things we need instead of leaving the problems we have now.”

Caroline Caulfield said: “Perhaps if they repaired all the derelict buildings in the city they’d be able to provide homes for a great many people without building new homes.”

Sam Johnston said: “Looks like a great plan to develop a new district in Carlisle with sustainability and connectivity at its centre.”

Martin Stothart said: “Great news for Carlisle."
