A BOY accused of attempting to murder a fellow pupil has appeared in court.

The 16-year-old was brought before magistrates after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at Walney School on Tuesday.

Appearing in the dock wearing a navy jumper, the defendant spoke only to confirm his name and address.

The boy, who cannot identified because he is a youth, was held on remand overnight ahead of appearing before Barrow's youth court tomorrow.

He is also accused of possessing a knife.

The court is due to decide today whether he should be granted bail.

Chair of the bench Charles Crewdson said: "We are going to adjourn this to the youth court tomorrow.

"In the intervening period we will remand you in youth detention accommodation."

The boy who was stabbed is recovering having been released from hospital following the incident.

He was airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool after he was stabbed 'multiple times in the body' at around 10.10am on Tuesday, police said.

The school's headteacher John Richardson said there was a 'sense of shock' following the incident.

In a statement released the day after, he paid tribute to pupils' 'maturity' and 'care for others' in response.

“Today I have been truly humbled by your children," he said.

"Their maturity and care for others in response to the very upsetting incident yesterday has been exemplary and has seen the school environment return immediately to one that is calm and learning focused.

“We have been supported in school today by a number of counsellors who have provided both one to one and group support to students who have requested this and this will continue where students feel that would be helpful. Throughout today, staff across the school have provided opportunities to discuss the incident where appropriate to ensure students feel reassured as we move forwards.

“Whilst the incident of yesterday has left a sense of shock across our school community, I assure you that this was an isolated event and was very quickly under control.

“The calm response observed in school today is testament to the ethos of our school community."
