Two Cumbrian wildlife charities have received funding via an initiative run by a national housebuilder.
Penrith District Beekeepers’ Association and Eden Rivers Trust welcomed donations of £4,000 and £1,000 respectively by Persimmon.
Managing director Anthony Mansfield and Westmorland and Furness councillor Lorna Baker presented the cheques.
Margaret Riches, chair of the beekeeping charity, said the money will be ‘useful for developing the work’ with their bees in the future, and go toward constructing a path in an orchard.
Money will also be spent on ‘protective equipment’ for their colonies against Asian Hornets, a growing concern.
Elizabeth Radford, CEO Eden Rivers Trust, said the money will fund a ‘fully accessible doorway to the world of conservation in the town centre where everyone is welcome’ and where people can visit a nursery to learn more about how to grow native trees.
Mr Mansfield said: “It is brilliant to see local charities supporting and enhancing Cumbria’s stunning natural environment.
“I wish both every success for the future and look forward to seeing the positive impact their work has in the local area.”
