Emergency services have been called to reports of a suspected unexploded ordnance.
Navy bomb disposal units and the coastguard descended on the beach at Birling Gap following the report last night.
A large number of officers and coastguard team members could be seen working on the beach.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed the object was not an ordinance and was actually part of a car engine.
